Road spikes used to stop driver
A high-speed police chase, along 50
kilometres of rural arterial roads
between Edendale and Invercargill,
ended badly for one Bluff man.
Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail, of
Gore, said two lots of road spikes
were used to stop the man on Friday
night after he was spotted by a
Mataura constable, who had also
tried to stop him.
The fleeing driver reached speeds of
160kmh before reaching the outskirts
of Invercargill, driving on all four rims
of a white Holden Commodore.
Constable Rob Camden, of Wyndham,
said the man was finally caught on
McQuarrie St in south Invercargill.
The man was charged with driving
while disqualified, reckless driving
and endangering transport.
A man and his 10-year-old son
escaped without injury after being
involved in a truck and trailer crash
near Tapanui on Sunday.
Sgt McPhail said police and fire
services were called to the incident
at the Greenvale/Wooded Hill Rd
intersection after the truck and
trailer rolled upside down in a ditch,
causing a minor diesel spill.
A van, carrying 10 netball players to a
tournament in Christchurch, instead
ended up in the ditch near Gore at
9am on Sunday.
Sgt McPhail said the netballers, from
Invercargill, were uninjured after
their vehicle ended up in the gravel
by the 100kmh sign near east Gore.
No need for chopper
The Westpac Rescue helicopter was
called to an incident near Raes
Junction on Saturday, but was found
to be unneeded. Sgt McPhail said a
four-wheel-drive vehicle rolled on
black ice near the junction at 3.30pm.
Its occupants received minor injuries.
A 23-year-old female, from Gore, will
appear in court after being stopped
on Ardwick St on Saturday at 9.10am
as a suspended driver. She is due in
the Gore District Court today.
A 34-year-old male will also appear in
court after producing a breath
alcohol level of 714mcg when he was
stopped on Diamond Peak Rd on
Saturday. Sgt McPhail said the man
was helped by a farmer after running
out of fuel at 12.35am but the farmer
then rang police. The man will appear
in the Gore District Court today.
Sharne Elizabeth Smith, 22, has two
warrants against her name. One is
for failing to appear in the
Invercargill District Court in regards
to drugs charges. Another is for
failing to appear in the Gore District
Court. She is believed to be in the
Swimmingly good time
Splish splash: The school holiday programme offered at the Gore Multisports complex is off to a soggy start
with water games galore on offer to entertain the kids. Co-ordinator Martin Mackereth said the children were
involved in a number of games, such as under water hockey, as well as learning skills like putting on snorkel
masks and swimming underwater. Participant Saskia Smith, 9, said she was having a lot of fun and especially
liked underwater hockey and doing dolphin dives. The holiday programme is on again today with a soccer
skills workshop and next Tuesday with kids spa, hamster ball ride and a barbecue. For more information
