Sosuccessful was last year’s ‘Backyard Beauties’
which was planned as a fundraiser for the
Balfour Sports Pavilion and showcased a range
of machinery and vehicles from through the ages,
that it was an easy decision for the organising team
to hold the event again this year.
Boys and their toys – and even the occasional female,
brought their pride and joy along on the day – from
out of sheds and garages, both nearby and from a
distance, these various vehicles of various makes,
shapes, sizes, ages and colours descended on the
Balfour Sports Ground.
Spokesperson Rochelle Dillon said not only were they
so pleased with the response from people keen to
display their pride and joy, they were also delighted
to have some very old vehicles and several rather
unique ones amongst the entries which people could
‘‘Peoples’ Choice on the day went to a beautifully
restored Cadillac,’’ she said. ‘‘It received a lot of
admiring looks and thoroughly deserved this award.’’
‘‘We hope the delightful range and the impression
this winning vehicle made during last year’s show
will inspire others to come along and enter the event
Mrs Dillon said last year’s event was a fantastic day.
‘‘The support from the community was awesome,
and we had lots of positive feedback from it.’’
‘‘We are looking forward to another great day this
year – it proved to be a great family event which
everyone really enjoyed.’’
Proceeds from this year’s day are also earmarked for
the Balfour Sports Pavilion.
‘‘Last year, along with grants we received from
Community Trust of Southland and the Southland
District Council, we managed to put in some new
windows, paint the toilets and put new vinyl on the
‘‘This year with the money we raise, our goal is to
continue with the Pavilion’s on-going maintenance,
and to build up enough funds to paint the exterior
and to purchase crockery etc for the kitchen which
we hope will make it more appealing for it to be
hired by groups.’’
Additional entertainment will be on site during the
day, ensuring something for everyone.
Mrs Dillon said there will be things to entertain the
Dads, things for the Mums and of course, lots of fun
things for the children to enjoy.
From the display of cars and machinery, to over 20
market stalls, needle in the haystack, bouncy castles,
face painting, lawn mower racing, a lolly scramble
with a special visit from ‘Little Flick’ who will be
giving children rides throughout the day.
Food will also be available on site and a cash bar as
well as a Pimms tent will be operating on the day to
As with last year’s event, Mrs Dillon said it would be
fantastic if those intending to participate could pre-
register their entry by contacting her on (03) 201
Vehicles and machinery will need to be onsite by 9.30
as gates open to the public at 10am.
