Great companion: My beautiful cat.
Growing up we always had three or four
cats on the farm.
One lost its whiskers when it came
across an angry family member and a
pair of scissors, but needless to say the cats were
always great company and a source of amusement
with their antics. (By the way the whiskers grew
When one cat died or ran away they would be
replaced by another kitten. So I was appalled by
economist Gareth Morgan's campaign to get rid of
cats because they are destroying our native bird
Sure, cats kill birds -- that is what they do.
But, they also kill rats and mice which are a
greater threat to the native bird population than
the domestic moggy.
The subject has caused a bit of debate at work,
especially with dog lovers who believe cat owners
don't have enough restrictions.
Dogs have to be registered, but cats don't.
Cats can wander wherever they like but dogs
But, wandering dogs are much more of a problem
than wandering cats, wouldn't you agree?
I was also annoyed by Morgan's comments that a
neighbour should be able to trap and kill your cat
if it wanders on to their property.
So, just how are we supposed to keep them
Lock them up 24 hours a day?
Well, that is what Morgan is proposing -- to keep
them inside all day every day.
If we did that, cats couldn't be cats and they
wouldn't be able to explore the great outdoors.
If your cat is anything like mine -- extremely well
fed with access to food at all times -- they will
probably be less inclined to hunt and more
inclined to sleep.
Maybe a curfew for cats, keeping them inside at
night, would be a better option than getting rid of

Big demand for southern dairy expo
COMING UP: Clutha Valley Lions Club president Dave
Wardell is looking forward to the Southern Region Dairy
Expo in Clydevale on February 20.
By DIANE BISHOP
We've even got a few stalls to cater
for the dairy farmer's wives.
The countdown is on to the Southern
Region Dairy Expo on February 20.
This is the second time the event,
organised by the Clutha Valley Lions
Club, is being held in the Clydevale
Lions Club president Dave Wardell said
the influx of dairy farmers in the region
had prompted the club to hold an expo as
a community fundraiser.
The expo was a one-stop-shop for dairy
farmers and dairy-related businesses, he
said. Mr Wardell said the first expo two
years ago was such a success that the
club decided to make it a biennial event.
More than 100 exhibitors were expected
to showcase their wares from farm
machinery and retail outlets through to
animal health and fertiliser companies.
''We've even got a few stalls to cater for
the dairy farmer's wives.''
Mr Wardell said the club expected about
40 to 50 exhibitors at the expo two years
ago but was ''blown away'' when more
than double that number attended.
''The feedback was really good.
''There seemed to be a genuine demand.''
The expo, which was attended by about
600 people in 2011, is a community
fundraiser and all money raised is
directed back into community projects.
Anyone interested in having a site at the
expo should contact Dave Wardell Ph
