Southland Times 22 years ago.

of the Fairfax Media stable, the
Newslink continues to prove popular
with the locals, with a readership of

tive and available free on a Thursday,

Newslink staff would like to take this
opportunity to thank both their readers
and advertisers for their ongoing
support and look forward to many more
years of the same. They would also like
you to join with them in wishing Marj
Stevenson all the best in her retirement
as she is leaving the Newslink after 22
years, having been a marketing
consultant with the paper, since its
inception in 1990.
Time for a change of pace
Marj certainly has a sense of humour. Here she is 'pole
dancing' outside the Gore office.

There comes a time when you realise that age
does have a bearing on your work ...
especially when you just get used to one
computer system then the powers that be decide
to change it all ... back to school was not an option
for me !!
In the olden day s my introduction to advertising
was a piece of blank paper, a pen and some
artwork , and Shorty Shaw saying make me up an
advert ... oh how things have changed.
My first Advertising Sales course was in the Board
Room at the Timaru Herald, five days solid, with a
half hour break for lunch each day.
The tutor played a tape, stopped it occassionally
and fired a question at one of us. With the limited
concentration span in situations like this, you can
imagine some of the answers did not go down too
well. How I ever passed the exams I will never
know. I went out on the following Monday with
lots of enthusiasm, facts and figures -- in other
words .. full of it. It didn t take me long to realise
that was not the way I wanted to sell advertising.
